For the sixth consecutive year, the Secretariat for Culture organizes the workshop entitled Ópera Oberta, la Ópera en la Universidad. According to course coordinator Joaquín Quílez, its purpose is ‘the democratization and the opening up of this artistic field which the general public usually sees as complex and elitist’. The workshop is structured around six live retransmissions via the Internet, five of them from Gran Teatre del Liceu (Barcelona) and one from Teatro Real (Madrid).

This year ‘the retransmissions are preceded by a multimedia class which contextualises the musical piece. The universities taking part in the project are responsible with organizing these classes; for instance, this year the UA is in charge of the presentation of Mozart’s The Marriage of Figaro, which will be retransmitted on November 26’, states Quílez.

The course begins with a session entitled Seducción y poder. La ópera y las pasiones. Pasión por la ópera (‘Seduction and power. Opera and passion. Passion for the opera) - a workshop that focuses on analysing the interaction between the opera and the other arts such as music or cinema, with direct reference to musicals. Retransmissions will then follow: on October 20 Tiefland by Eugen d’Albert; on November 26 Le nozze di Figaro by Mozart; on January 14 Simon Boccanegra by Verdi; on February 10 L’incoronazione de Poppea by Claudio Monteverdi; on May 18 Il ritorno d’Ulisse in patria by Claudio Monteverdi, and on May 27 Fidelio by Beethoven.
