‘Getting people to read and write poetry, making them open up to the poem’s rhythm and structure, putting an end to the myths around poetry’ is, according to professor Julián López Medina, the central objective of the workshop ‘Lectura y Creación Poética', organized by the Secretariat for Culture from October 21 until December 23 within the framework of its courses.

The workshop, centred on Spanish and Latin-American poetry, will focus on reading and analysing poems by Gamoneda, Ángel González, Lorca, Leopoldo María Panero, Vicente Gallego and Miguel Ángel Velasco, among others. ‘The workshop is mainly interactive in nature, due to numerous class discussions, and it involves group work activities for writing poems, as well as ‘exquisite corpse’ exercises; we will also experiment with the poetic vanguards, organize poem recitals and listen to musicalized poems, in order to analyse issues related to the rhythm, for instance. We’ll also watch films that give food for thought, such as El desencanto, on the life of the Panero family’, the professor states.

Apart from these materials, the workshop will use the resources provided by the Miguel de Cervantes Virtual Library such as the voice library which allows one to listen to poets reciting their own creations. According to López Medina, ‘it’s important to make students aware of the numerous resources the university offers them’.
