On September 17, the UA Aifos Hall opens the exhibition Dibuixar (‘Drawing’) by Josep Grau-Garriga (San Cugat, Barcelona, 1929), the renowned artist who explores informal surrealism. For this occasion, the veteran artist ‘created a series of 27 drawings that deal with the idea of art and compromise. The works were exhibited in Alcoy, at the Centre Ovidi Montllor which organized the exhibition and which is presided by Antoni Miró’, states Sandra Obiols, centre manager.

As the artist has accustomed us on other occasions, Grau-Garriga’s drawings have an ‘an unsettling plastic strength, with just the right colour touches and a way of dealing with the material which is reminiscent of collage’, states journalist Pau Grau i Mira, who has also written the text of the exhibition catalogue. ‘The works border tenderness and brutality and they relate to the environment via compromise’; relevant examples in this respect are Prestige, Fanatisme or Iguals. The exhibition also pays homage to Ovidi Montllor, by means of topics such as youth, danger, communication, destiny and passion.

Grau Garriga has been the promoter of tapestry, elevating it to art status; he has also revitalized the concepts which had governed the discipline in Spain until the 1950s. He studied art at Facultat de Belles Arts in Barcelona, and has had an extensive professional trajectory which includes drawing, painting, sculpture, engraving, tapestry and environment art. His creations can be viewed in the world’s main collections and museums.

The exhibition is open until October 14.
