WHAT WOULD JESUS BUY?

What would Jesus buy? (EEUU, 2007) will be shown within the series Documentary of the Month on 5 December at 20:00 and 22:00 at the University Venue of Alicante City. The film, written and directed by Rob Van Alkemade and produced by Morgan Spurlock (Super size me), follows Reverend Billy and the Church of Stop Shopping Gospel Choir along and across the USA during his mission to save Christmas from the Shopocalypse: the end of humankind from consumerism and the hell of eternal debt.

Bill Talen (Reverend Billy) was a hopeless idealist who hitchhiked to New York just to find Times Square was becoming a shopping center. Encouraged by the loss of his neighbourhood and inspired by the preachers around him, he bought a collar, bleached his hair and became the Reverend Billy of the Church of Stop Shopping. Since 1999, he has gone from being a lone preacher with a portable pulpit to the leader of a congregation with thousands of followers.

As the director said: "I made the short Preacher with an unknown god that year, and that led me to this movie, What would Jesus buy? The idea was simple: in six weeks we would gather a very concrete working plan, a considerable budget, some philanthropists forced to reduce our purchases, a brave team and two buses to carry forty activists. With that support, we knew that the only thing we had to do was getting out there and save Christmas from the Shopocalypse".

Through interventions in businesses, corporate exorcisms and some old-fashioned preaching, Reverend Billy reminds us that we have lost the true meaning of Christmas. What would Jesus buy? is a journey into the heart of America, where demons are exorcised at the Wal-Mart headquarters and finally heading to the Promised Land... Disneyland.
