In the moment of the 400 anniversary of the expulsion of the Moorish from the Iberian Peninsula, the University of Alicante, through the Area of Arabic and Islamic Studies and the Office of the Vice President of Extracurricular Activities, has organized the last great commemorative congress dedicated to this matter. The Congress, called La identidad islámica de los moriscos. Homenaje a Míkel de Epalza, will be held between the 23rd and the 26th of November in the Aula Magna of the Faculty of Arts (Filosofía y Letras).

According to its director, Luis F. Bernabé, "we will have the participation of the main national and international specialists, and all of them have had a personal or investigative link with Mikel de Epalza, one of the most important Arabian specialists of Spain, and whose works are essential to the study of Islam in the Iberian Peninsula and the Magreb". The first preparations for the congress started three years ago with the participation of the own professor of Arabic of the University of Alicante, Míkel de Epalza,"with the objective of paying tribute to his works, but after his death the tribute will be made extensive, moreover, to his figure", the director of the congress explains.

One of the novelties of the congress regarding other which have taken place throughout this year is, according to Bernabé, "that further than the generalists questions or of the state of the question, the Moorish identity, the personality of those expulsed and the role that they play inside the Islam will be tackled in a systematic way".
The most outstanding specialists both national and from Europe and the North of Africa will be together in it. Some of them are Bernard Vincent -Doctor honoris causa by the UA-, Abdel-Hakim Slama-Gafsi - the main disciple of Epalza in Tunis-, Leonard P. Harvey, Mercedes García-Arenal and José María Perceval among others.

Projection of the premiere

To complete the program of conferences it will be projected the video titled Expulsados 1609. La tragedia de los moriscos, a work halfway through the documentary and the fiction in which it is narrated the expulsion trough a Moorish family of Aragon which finally settles down in Tunis. The narration, of great documentary and historical value constitutes a milestone with the intervention of the main scholars of the world in this matter, many of them attending the congress. This is the first time that this work, produced by Casa Árabe, is projected in the Valencian Community. Luis F. Bernabé explains that this is a unique opportunity to watch the documentary which has only been exhibited on specialized television channels. The projection will take place on the 24th of November at 12:30 in the Aula Magna of the Faculty of Arts (Filosofía y Letras 2). The entrance is free and limited to the capacity of the room.
