The Vives Net for Universities has announced the 6th Edition of the University Debate League. The University will have the contest, which will analyze the question: "If we want peace, is it necessary to be prepared for war?" from the 26th to the 30th of April.

The Debate League is a dialectic contest addressed to the students of the 20 Universities which are members of the Vives Net, in which, for four days, teams composed by university students debate about a controversial and current topic. The sixth edition of the League will have a qualifying round, that will take place from the 26th to the 29th of April, and one final round on the 30th of April. The Jury of the contest will be composed by experts in different spheres of knowledge. The team which wins the contest will get a prize of 2.500 €, and the sub champion team will get 1.200 €. There also will be a prize for the best speaker of the context, who will be designated by the Jury, and the work of the best team of the League, which will be chosen by the own participants.

The objective of the League is to promote the use of words between university students under the format of a dialectic confrontation, where the most valued things are abilities as team work, soundness of arguments, fluidity in interventions and the correction both semantic and formal.

It is organized by the Vives Net, and the VI League of University Debate has the support of the Generalitat of Catalonia and the Regional Ministry of Education and Culture of the Government of the Balearic Islands.

The University of Alicante participates with a team of 4 students coordinated by the professor of the Department of Catalan Studies Sandra Montserrat. The contestants who will go to Lleida are Jordi Domènech (Catalan Studies), Edith Guerrero (Law), David Navarro (Translation and Interpreting) and Andreu Sentí (Catalan Studies), leader of the team. During last first semester this group, together with 15 more students, has participated in the workshop about techniques for the preparation of speeches and debates, organized by the Secretariat for Culture, where they could develop the discursive abilities of the dialectic confrontations among different teams. To develop these abilities is a basic requirement for the good operation of a democratic society, based on the dialog and on the confrontation of ideas. In addition, to achieve a good capacity for producing and negotiate speeches is an excellent tool for the incorporation of the students to the labour market.
