The 10th edition of the University Debate League of the institution Vives Network will be carried out from 31 March to 4 April at the University of Girona and it will be based on the question: should working conditions accommodate to the labour market situation? This contest has the support of the Banco Sabadell Foundation and the Secretariat for Universities and Research of the Generalitat of Catalonia. Since 2005, the Vives Network has organized this competition, consisting of one week of debates about a controversial, current topic between different university student teams. These teams represent their University and can be composed of a maximum of 5 members –2 speakers, 2 documentalists and 1 reserve–, apart from the captain.

This year, 14 university teams will take part in the League: Alicante, Autonomous of Barcelona, Barcelona, Girona, Balearic Islands, International of Catalonia, Jaume I, Miguel Hernández of Elche, Open of Catalonia, Pompeu Fabra, Ramon Llull, Rovira i Virgili, Valencia and Vic-Central of Catalonia.

The competition will start on Monday, 31 March at 4.30 pm with the formal opening and the draw of contestant teams. The debates will be judged by a panel of 8 people and will be coordinated by 2 Chief Judges, who will look after the unity of criteria. The final debate will be judged by an honorary panel that will not have attended to the previous debates.

The members of the honorary panel will be: Fabrice Lorente, President of the Vives Network and University President of the University of Perpignan Via Domitia; Sergi Bonet, 3rd Vicepresident of the Vives Network and University President of the University of Girona; Claudi Alsina, Secretary General of the Inter-University Council of Catalonia; Sonia *Mulero, Assistant Director of the Banco Sabadell Foundation: Isabel Muradàs, fourth Deputy Mayor and Councilor for Education and Sports; Rafael Nadal, journalist and writer.

Furthermore, the members of the panel on the qualifying rounds will be: Lluís Gil, coordinator of the Reading Point Santo Narciso (Girona) and organizer of cultural and literary activities; Glòria Gómez, teacher of Catalan language and literature in the High School Fco. Figueras Pacheco of Alicante; Xavier Martí, journalist and historian; Francesc Xavier Plana, lawyer; Martí Peraferrer, actor and theater director; Pere Rastrojo, journalist for the Economics and Politics section of the newspaper Información of Alicante; Anna Salmón, graduated and doctor of Psychology; Enric Sucarrats, director of the Jaume Casademont Foundation.

The panels will be coordinated by two Chief Judges: Anna Albó, doctor, and Pere Miquel Campos, journalist.

The aim of the University Debate League is to encourage students to use dialogue through a dialectic confrontation in which they have to defend a position in favour or against a current subject. The panel will judge skills like teamwork, strength of the reasoning, the fluency of the speech and the semantic and formal correctness.

The last day of the competition will occur simultaneously with the final of the Lower & Upper Secondary Education Debate League, which this year has local phases in Castellón and Alicante, organized by the Escuela Valenciana and supported by the Vives Network. On Saturday the 5th and Sunday the 6th, the phase of Alicante for high school students will take place (in the Alicante City University Venue and in Club Información).

This competition is part of the programme of activities carried out for the 20th anniversary of the Vives Network.
