THE END OF THE CIVIL WAR IN ALICANTE. SUPPRESSION AND EXILE", IN ALCOI

Pictures, display cabinets with objects and historical documents are part of the exhibition 'El final de la Guerra Civil en Alicante. Represión y Exilio' (“The end of the Civil War in Alicante. Suppression and exile”), organized by the Archive of Democracy of the University of Alicante in collaboration with the Civic Commission of Alicante for the recovering of the historical memory. The exhibition will remain open to the public from 8th to 30th of May in the Unesco Exhibition Room in Alcoi, located in calle El Cid, 12.

The exhibition assembles all the events of that historical moment, so as the suppression arising when Franco’s regime began and the exile from which a lot of Alicante citizens would never return. In March 1939, the city and the province of Alicante were key locations in some of the final events of the Spanish Civil War: the establishment, in the Medio Vinalopó region, of the last Republican Government, with Juan Negrín as its head; the exile of thousands of republicans on several boats, especially on the Stanbrook; and the tragedy that happened in the port of Alicante, when about 15,000 people gathered there waiting for ships to escape the suppression caused by the dictatorship. But those ships never appeared due to the inhibition of western democracies.

After some summary trials held without any legal guarantee, lots of people ended their lives in front of a firing squad and even more were detained in concentration camps or in overcrowded prisons, or performed forced labours to build monuments, reservoirs and roads.

The ones who managed to go into exile had to piece their lives together again in different countries and, in many cases, kept fighting against the fascism in the Second World War. Thousands of Alicante citizens settled in North Africa, France, the Soviet Union, Mexico and other countries, and about two hundred were put in Nazi extermination camps, where most died.
