VISIT TO THE NATURAL PARK OF THE SANTA POLA SALT LAKES

This Saturday, the Science Classroom of the University of Alicante will mark World Environment Day with a visit to the Natural Park of Santa Pola Salt Lakes. At 10 a.m. Carles Martín Cantarino, coordinator of the Classroom, UA lecturer and environmentalist, will give the conference “The importance of salt harvesting throughout history” in the Museum’s Interpretation Room. Then, an interpretative tour of the Rodal de Sant Tomàs will be offered. Places are limited, so please register by phoning 966693546 or e-mailing Parque_santapola@gva.es. You will need your own vehicle for the visit.

“Barilla” (saltwort) plants are typical from arid lands and saline soils. When burnt, they produce ashes that are very rich in sodium carbonate. In the past, these ashes were used to make certain types of bleaches, and they were also key in glass and soap production until the early 20th century.

In his talk “The importance of salt harvesting throughout History - Funding of the Mystery Play of Elche by means of salt harvesting in the Rodal de Sosa de Santo Tomás”, Carlos Martín Cantarino, lecturer of the University of Alicante and coordinator of the UA’s Science Classroom, will take us back to that time and explain the social and financial importance of salt for the cities of Elche and Alicante.

Once the conference is over, there will be a guided tour through the Rodal de Santo Tomàs.
