CULTURAL AGENDA FOR JULY: MORE CULTURE, ALSO IN THE SUMMER

In July, ACUA (the University of Alicante’s cultural agenda) offers many cultural activities related with UA’s Rafael Altamira Summer Courses, to be held on campus and in the University Venue of Alicante, among others.

In the performing arts section, UA will hold the 2nd La Alcudia-University of Alicante Classic Theatre Festival. The programme includes five open-air performances in La Alcudia archaeological site. Tickets can be bought at Instant ticket, Compás bookshop and La Alcudia. For only €10, attendees can enjoy the play and a Roman food tasting earlier that is sponsored by the Asociación para el Desarrollo del Campo de Elche. Dinner will be at 9 p.m., and the plays will start at 10 p.m.

On the other hand, MICROTEATRO DE ANDAR POR CASA, by Pascual Carbonell, will be staged at the University of Alicante’s Museum (MUA). More than twenty actors will play twelve scenes, written by nine different authors, and the audience will be randomly divided into groups of 30 people and guided through four different scenes, 15 minutes long each. The play will be staged on Wednesday, 9 july, at 8 p.m. Entrance will be free.

The play will be staged again the next day, 10 July, in the La Marina University Venue (where the entrance will also be free), and in the Governor’s House in Tabarca island. Also in Tabarca, on 19 July, at 8 p.m., Plautus’ Miles Gloriosus will be staged by the company Saineters Teatre.

On July 10, puppet show Big Ears - not a saint, not a thief can be enjoyed in Villena, in the Patio de la Tercia, at 8 p.m.

Poet Dinu Flamand, Romanian Counsellor-Minister of the Francophonie in Paris, will hold a reading of his book On the clothesline that will be accompanied by the music of Carolina Martínez Báez Otermín, concertmaster of the University of Alicante’s Philharmonic Orchestra


MUSIC

The UA will hold the traditional Summer Concerts, which will start on 2 July in Polop de la Marina and continue on July 3 in Chapí Theatre in Villena, and on July 6 in Parc Barranc de la Font, in Xixona. Entrance to all concerts will be free. On July 5, at 8 p.m., a charity Summer Concert will be held in the Auditorio Provincial de la Diputación de Alicante (ADDA) to raise funds for the association Vínculos Infantiles of Alicante. Tickets are now available for €15, and all the money raised will go directly to the association.

On Saturday 5 july, at 11 p.m., the Vargas Blues Band will perform at Villena’s Town Hall & Cultural Centre Square Entrance will be free. Also in Villena, on 11 July, Copacabana Big Band from Sax will give a tribute concert to great artists such as Nina Simone, Nat King Cole, Frank Sinatra, Glenn Miller… That same day, Benissa will host a jazz event: the Soul Jazz Quartet will perform at 8 p.m. Entrance is free.

On 7 July, guitarist Yoshimi Otani will perform at the Alicante City University Venue, where he will play a wide range of pieces ranging from Bach, Granados and Albéniz to Japanese music.

Also, La Paloma pluck and pick orchestra will perform on Saturday, 12 July, in El Teular (Cocentaina) at 7.30 p.m,
Almus Quartet will give a concert in El Teatret Room, in Xixona, and the closing concert of the students of the 8th International Course on Modern Music will be held in La Nucia. Entrance will be free.

More music events will take place on campus: on 17 July, Pelikana band will give a concert at the MUA’s terrace and offer attendees a bar service with soft drinks and appetizers. On the same day, at 8.30 p.m., the Alicante City University Venue will host the José Tomás International Guitar Festival concert, which will also be shown at 10.30 p.m. in Cine Roma, in Alfàs del Pi.

CINEMA

In July, the University of Alicante will organise an outdoor Cinema Campus where three films will be shown in the Amphitheatre of Lecture Hall 2.

Sessions will be held on Wednesdays (9, 16 and 23 July) and will start at 9.30 p.m. The first two films (Gravity and About time) will be shown in the original version with Spanish subtitles, whereas the third film (The great beauty) will be shown in its Catalan version. There will be a bar where the attendees can buy drinks and snacks.

On July 16, a cinema forum on the film The social network will be held in Villena. The film will be shown in the La Tercia patio, and afterwards there will be a debate on the role of social networks and new technologies. It will start at 9.30 p.m. and entrance is free.
