14 CULTURAL EVENTS IN SEPTEMBER AND OCTOBER

The academic year starts at the University of Alicante with 14 cultural events, organised within the new cultural agenda of the Office of the Vice President for Culture, Sports & Language Policies in September and October.

During the month of September, the scheduled cultural events are included in the traditional ‘Welcome Week’ and are therefore targeted towards lettingthe students know some of the activities included in the Culture Workshops: Cinema Workshop, presenting the 9th magazine Quaderns de Cine and two film screenings (Duck Soup and Searching for sugar Man) on 16 and 23 September, at 20.30, in the Amphitheatre of Lecture Building 2; Theatre Workshop, staging the play Microteatro de andar por casa (Home-made micro theatre) (on 24 September from 10.00 to 2.00 p-m. and from 4.00 to 7.00 p.m in different locations on campus); and the Music Workshop, with the performance of the UA choir, in front of the Main Library, from 11.00 to 12.00 and from 12.30 to 1.00 p.m., on the 25th.

Also on 25 September, the traditional Welcome Concert will be held in collaboration with Cadena Ser radio station. This year’s headliner will be Mr. Kilombo, and EW Records will be the supporting band. Takones Rumberos Social Club set DJ’s performance will close the event. The concert will be held in the Amphitheatre of Lecture Building 2 at 8.30 p.m., and admission will be invitation only (invitations are available in the MIC, the Cultural Information Point of the University of Alicante Museum).

The last performance of the month will be Vanesa Teba La Grina’s, a flamenco concert included in the Divendres a la SEU events programme, to be held at the Alicante City University Venue on 26 September at 8.30 p.m. Admission is free.

OCTOBER

October events agenda will begin with two activities on the 7th to mark the 9 October holiday: the presentation of VerdCel’s new album (in the Residential College at 12.00 a.m., €3 admission fee), and Pep Botifarra Trio, in the College as well at 8.00 p.m. (admission by invitation).

October’s agenda also includes a dance theatre play, two in-house productions and two plays produced outside the University; in total, five plays: Aristophanes’ Assemblywomen, to be staged in the Auditorium on 14 October at 12.00 (€3 admission fee); The memory of Objects, on the 15th at 8.00 p.m. in the Auditorium (invitation only); Seneca’s Oedipus, on the 21st at 12.00 in the Auditorium (€3 admission fee); Ballant’Espriu (Dancing to Salvador Espriu, a dance theatre play) on the 29th at 8 p.m. in the Auditorium (€3 admission fee); and Diàlegs de Dalt i de Baix (Dialogues from Up and Down), on the 30th at 8.00 p.m. in the Auditorium (invitation only).

On 22 October, Cadena 100 Concert will be held, also in the Auditorium, although the artists that will be performing are yet to be confirmed. Attendees will have the opportunity to enjoy eleven of this season’s proposals for free (invitation only) and three of them for just €3.

Among the events to be held at the beginning of this academic year is the opening of exhibition “‘El Artista y la Madre (The Artist and the Mother). Daniel Escolano’s works. MUA COLLECTION. - MARÍA CÁRCEL COLL COLLECTION”, to be held on 12 September at 8.00 p.m. at the MUA. The opening will also include a performance by musician Luis Ivars, who will be interpreting some of Daniel Escolano’s pieces. This season’s exhibitions also include “Salud, ciudades y ciudadanos. Historia Sanitaria de Alicante (1850-1960)” (Health care, cities and citizens. Alicante’s health care history 1850-1960), which can be enjoyed in Aifos room (Building 3 of the Faculty of Arts) until 24 October; and Exposición Conmemorativa 35 años de la Universidad de Alicante (University of Alicante’s 35th Anniversary Commemorative Exhibition), until 23 December at MUA’s El Club room.
