A UA PROFESSOR WINS THE CIUTAT DE SAGUNT NARRATIVE PRIZE

Joaquim Espinós Felipe (Benilloba, El Comtat, 1962), senior lecturer at the Department of Catalan Studies of the University of Alicante, has won the 17th edition of the Ciutat de Sagunt Narrative Prize with his novel Material fotogràfic. The event, organised by the Valencian Language Promotion Service, took place last 17 October in Sagunto.

In an effective and well documented way, Material fotogràfic talks about the exciting and relatively untold story of Valencian emigration to the USA in the early decades of the 20th century. The book tells the story of three eighteen-year-old friends who decide to travelto the USA by boat to change the course of their lives. The story is set in 1918, where hard conditions in Valencian rural areas forced people off their land. In New York, they go through all sorts of misfortunes and adventures, which they could never have dreamt of in their traditional and quiet hometown. Unfortunately, not all of them choose the right path. This trip truly changes their lives forever.

Joaquim Espinós specialised in contemporary literature, focusing specifically on the post-war period, the exile and current literature as well as the relationship between literature and cinema.

He has published several articles in magazines such as L'Espill, Caplletra and Catalan Review, as well as compilations and specialised books. He also has a blog called elsalimentsterrestres.blogspot.com and collaborates as a literary critic for Diario Información newspaper of Alicante and Càracters magazine, among others.

In the literary creation field, he has published Joan de l’Iris i el rossinyol (Meliana City Council, 2002), a children’s book that won the Empar de Lanuza Prize, and the novels La devastació violeta (Bullent, 1991), winner of Enric Valor Children’s Narrative Prize; Ombres en el riu (Bullent, 1995) and El cervell de la serp (3 i 4 Publishing house, 2007), winner of Antoni Bru Prize at the Ciutat d’Elx Narrative Prizes in 2006.
