JORNADAS DE INDUSTRIAS CULTURALES Y CREATIVAS EN FILOSOFÍA Y LETRAS

On 5 November, at 8.00 p.m., Compañía Ferroviaria will give a preview of its new show, Peter Shaffer’s Equus. The play has been co-produced by Teatro Circo from Murcia and directed by Paco Macià. Tickets are 5 euro and can be bought at Compás bookshop, Instant Ticket, and in the Auditorium one hour before the show.

Equus speaks about individuals and their relationships with today’s tamed society. The play is based upon one the most acclaimed creations of British writer Peter Shaffer, known for his special way of analysing society from both the dramatic and the comedic perspective. He became widely known thanks to his extremely popular work Amadeus, which became even more famous after it was made into a film directed by Milos Forman, whose script was written by Shaffer himself.

In this case, the screenplay is Paco Macià and Isabel Guerrero’s version of the play, written by Shaffer in 1973. It revolves around Allan, a mentally unstable teenager who seeks his passion in an unconventional way and ends up exerting violence on the horses he takes care of. This abominable behaviour is due to the young protagonist’s frustration and lack of ability to adapt to the world he was raised in, a world that he cannot understand. The work done by his psychiatrist Dysart and the relationship between them are the main elements in this thriller that also has a touch of mystery.

As the theatre company explains about the play, “society makes people follow the tiled road and respect what is established; different people are marginated, and mechanisms are created to bring wayward sheep back with the flock, back to normal, and normal means the behaviour we have all assumed and understood”.

Set design is by Ángel Haro, lighting is by Pedro Yagüe, costume design is by Eloísa Azorín and music is by Leandro Martínez-Romero. Actors are César Oliva Bernal, Jaime Lorente, Eloísa Azorín, Toni Medina, Anaïs Duperrein, Lorenza Di Colagero and Antonio Mateos.
