On Tuesday 21 October, at 1.00 p.m., Korea in Pictures will be opened by the University of Alicante in collaboration with the Korean Cultural Centre. This new exhibition will be held inTránsit Room (Hall ofLecture Building 2). Josep Ochoa, the director of the Office for Cultural Promotion, will inaugurate the exhibition, which will be open to the public until 31 October.

This exhibition shows a photographic tour through representative places in the Asian country, its landscapes, its people and its customs. This is meant to bring the social and cultural reality in South Korea closer to the university community and to people from Alicante in general.

According to the exhibition’s organizers, in 1593 South Korea, then known as the ‘Hermit Kingdom’, opened to the world with the advent of the first westerner: Gabriel de Céspedes y Simancas, a Jesuit from Madrid. Nowadays, South Korea is a modern, democratic country and one of the most advanced economies in the world. Although its industry and powerful brands like Samsung, LG or KIA are famous, Korea and its culture are not so known as a result of having two powerful countries (China and Japan) as neighbours.

The exhibition contains good pictorial examples of the millenarian culture of the ‘Land of the Morning Calm’. It also includes photographs of the country’s traditions linked to Hansik (Korean cooking), Hangukhwa (Korean painting), Gukak (traditional Korean music), calligraphy in Hanji (Korean handmade paper) and Hanbok (traditional Korean costume).
