'Llapis, paper i bombes. 1936-1939' Held in Sant Joan

The Culture Centre’s Exhibition Room of Sant Joan in Alicante holds the showing ‘Llapis, paper i bombes. 1936-1939’ (‘Pencil, paper and bombs. 1936-1939’) from 8 to 27 January. The exhibition is made up of a hundred drawings made by children who were evacuated to different places in Europe during the Spanish Civil War. There, they were raised and educated in safe colonies. During their stay, children captured their heartbreaking war experiences in drawings they made in a paper with coloured pencils.

These drawings were placed on different institutions such as the Spanish National Library or the Universities of California, San Diego and Columbia, in New York. Drawings made by children who were evacuated to Russia have been included too. They have been loaned by Asociación Archivo, Guerra y Exilio (War and Exile Files Association) and the Spanish Centre in Moscow.

The exhibition is also made up of pictures and posters of that time belonging to the Salamanca’s Documentation Centre for Historical Memory. Italian musician Giovanni Alberto Croatto has composed a soundtrack specially for this showing.

The exhibition is divided into three sections. The first part includes drawings related with the three main civil war zones: the bombing of Madrid (where many of the children came from), the bombing of Port Bou (where the children who were evacuated to the colonies in Southern France came from), and the battle of Teruel, as a symbol of the republicans’ hope. The second section is made up of drawings depicting daily life in the colonies, and the third part is about the kids’ evacuation from their homes to the colonies. The exhibition has been coordinated by the University of Alicante and a group of History teachers from several Alicante High Schools, including José Antonio Fernández, Ramón Galdrán, Remedios Izquierdo, Carlos Salinas and Teresa Sanz.

The MUA has also edited a learning guide for students and teachers in Valencian and Spanish, as well as a bilingual workbook.
