The exhibition Recordant Sempere. Diàlegs en la col·lecció del MUA has been organised to mark the celebration of Sempere’s Year at the University of Alicante. It is made up of twelve screen printings and two engravings by Eusebio Sempere, together with works by other artists from the museum’s collection, such as José Gutiérrez Solana, Eduardo Chillida, Salvador Victoria and Julius Shulman, together with other well-known artists such as Albert Agulló, Javier Lorenzo, María Chana, Julián Casado, Aurelia Masanet, Jaume Rocamora, Martín Noguerol and Francisco José Montalbán. Works by young artists such as Aitor Ortiz and Ana Maya will also be shown.

The exhibition can be visited in MUA’s Arcadi Blasco Room until 31 December 2015.

Selected pieces are a look back on Eusebio Sempere’s long artistic career, in an exhibition that will take viewers on a journey through the formal, aesthetic, technical and conceptual aspects of his works, allowing them to analyse every detail and understand this artist’s creation better.

Eusebio Sempere (Onil, 1923-1985) received Prince of Asturias Award for the Arts in 1983, and was awarded the University of Alicante’s Doctor Honoris Causa Degree in 1984. He was one of the key figures in Spanish artistic creation in the second half of the twentieth century. Sempere explored geometrical abstraction, constructivism, optical and kinetic art, as well as several artistic disciplines such as painting, sculpture and graphic works. He brought the art of screen printing to Spain after learning it in Paris, where he lived between 1948 and 1960.

Besides investigating space, one of Sempere’s key challenges was enhancing light; for this purpose, he applied an extremely subtle and arduous technique on his screen printings, based upon a net-like tangle of drawing pen lines that capture light. This meticulous work process became his trademark, and was also representative of this artist’s personality, which can be seen in the balance and peace that his works exhale, in the harmony of his colours and compositions, and in the exquisiteness of the lines drawn on the paper.

April 2015 will be the 30th anniversary of Eusebio Sempere’s death, and so public institutions and universities in the Region of Valencia, together with Eusebio Sempere and Abel Martín’s families, have gathered to mark the occasion.
One of the University of Alicante’s main goals is to make Eusebio Sempere’s artistic collection known, and to this end interpretations of his works based upon material, technical and pedagogical criteria have been shown since 2005.

Nowadays, MUA’s collection has over 1,000 works by Sempere, including his complete, outstanding graphic works, made up of 159 screen printings, 16 engravings and 5 lithographies.
