"YOUR FUTURE IN LANGUAGES" INSTITUTIONAL CAMPAIGN

As part of the University of Alicante’s firm commitment towards the creation of a multilingual campus, institutional campaign “Your Future in Languages” was presented today by UA President Manuel Palomar.

Carles Cortés, Vice President for Culture, Sports and Language Policies, as well as Juan Llopis, Vice President for International Relations, also attended the presentation, where the University President announced an increase in language teaching and in the number of subjects to be taught in English, French and Valencian, as well as Spanish, in academic year 2015-2016.

Palomar highlighted the 31% increase in the percentage of students choosing to attend classes in Valencian (at least one subject), which this academic year went up to 23.62%. When it comes to English, 17.56% of students chose to study subjects in this language in academic year 2014-2015, which is a 23% increase with respect to previous years’ figures.

According to Palomar, these figures have been achieved thanks to the consolidation and increase in the number of subjects that can be studied in other languages. In academic year 2014-2015, there were Valencian teaching groups in 15.8% of all subjects taught at the University of Alicante, and an English group was available in 13.7% of them.

Last, UA President highlighted the need for students to master several languages in this globalised world: “they must be provided with thorough, high-quality language training in order to successfully meet the needs of the 21st century job market”.

UA and its management team are strongly committed with increasing teaching in Valencian, English and other languages, “despite the difficulties that universities are going through right now”, said Palomar.

Juan Llopis, Vice President for International Relations, also said that thanks to the fact that around 200 UA subjects can be studied in English, more and more international students are applying to study here.

Carles Cortés, Vice President for Culture, Sports and Language Policies, added that this campaign is possible thanks to the collaboration and understanding between all university centres, departments and lecturers, together with the Offices of the Vice Presidents for International Relations, Studies Planning, Students, Culture and Language Policies. Willingness to work together and make this campaign a success is powered by our students’ demands, and it stays strong despite our current financial situation.

The campaign is supported by the Language Volunteering Programme, which will provide on-campus information about subjects that can be studied in several languages at the UA. Also, Adrián Arnaiz and José Pastor, UA Publicity and Public Relations students, have created the campaign’s promotional video.
