FIVE SUMMER CONCERTS BY THE UA'S PHILHARMONIC ORCHESTRA

Carles Cortés, UA Vice President for Culture, Sports and Language Policy, has presented the Summer Concerts cycle to be held by UA’s Philharmonic Orchestra (OFUA) together with Mircea Ignat, the Orchestra’s tenured and artistic conductor. Juan Vicente Peral, representative from the local Food Bank, and Carlos Giner from APSA also attended the event, as did the concerts’ sponsors: Francisco Bartual (General Director of HIDRAQUA Comunidad Valenciana), Sofía Blasco (Director of Fundación Marjal foundation), and Raúl Lafuente (Vice President of Fundación Cajamar Comunidad Valenciana foundation). Sponsorship agreements were signed shortly before the press conference.

This year, OFUA’s summer programme includes 5 concerts: two will be held in the Alicante province (3 June in Orihuela, 5 June in Monóvar), two will be charitable concerts (6 and 19 June), and one will be held in Valencia, the region’s capital, on 1 July.

On Saturday 6 June, OFUA will perform at the Auditorium of the Provincial Council of Alicante (ADDA) to mark World Environment Day. The event is sponsored by HIDRAQUA, and all funds raised will go to the Food Bank. On 19 June, OFUA will perform again at the ADDA; the concert will be sponsored by Fundación Marjal foundation, and funds will go to APSA association. Tickets for these two concerts are 15 euros, and the University of Alicante also offers the possibility of buying donation tickets on Instanticket, for those unable to attend the concert yet wishing to make a contribution.

This year’s summer concerts cycle is sponsored by Fundación Cajamar Comunidad Valenciana foundation, and will end on 1 July at the University of Valencia. The last concert will be held within the framework of SINERGIA, RED DE ORQUESTAS UNIVERSITARIAS encounters, aimed at promoting musical experiences exchange and organised by the Music Activities Board, the General Foundation of the University of Valencia, and the Music Club, managed by the University of Valencia’s Office of the Vice President for Culture and Gender Equality. OFUA was invited to open this concert cycle, where talks on the present and future of orchestras will be also held, with the participation of other University Orchestras such as the ones from Murcia and Granada.

Violin player Fermín Villanueva will participate in the shows of 4, 5 and 6 June and 1 July as a soloist. On the 19 June ADDA performance, OFUA will be accompanied by well-known soloists Lina Tur Bonet and Ángel Luis Quintana.

Mihnea Ignat, the Orchestra’s Tenured and Artistic director, has chosen pieces by Schumann, Brahms and Beethoven for this concert cycle. In his own words, the programme is built around L. van Beethoven’s Third Symphony, known as “the Heroic Symphony”, one of the key symphonical works for all orchestras, and also the artist’s greatest work in terms of artistic reflection, humanism and social concerns. From the point of view of composition, this work is also an example of how Beethoven applied extremely innovative techniques back in his days, which demand intensive preparation from players. Besides this symbolic symphony, the orchestra will also perform Schumann’s Op. 129 Cello and Orchestra Concerto in A minor with outstanding, national and international award-winning soloist Fermin Villanueva. This is one of the most demanding concertos in this specific repertoire, both technically and musically; a true treasure of German musical romanticism.

Next 19 June, OFUA’s concert in Alicante will include a classic piece from German Romanticism: J. Brahm’s Double Concerto in A minor, Op. 102, for violin, cello and orchestra. Two great, internationally-known players will join OFUA on this occasion: Lina Tur Bonet, international violinist whose most recent recordings have received awards and special mentions from prestigious national and international music magazines; and Ángel Luis Quintana, soloist cellist at the Spanish National Orchestra. Quintana is also a lecturer at the Escuela Superior de Música Reina Sofía in Madrid, Barcelona’s Liceu Conservatory and the Rotterdam Conservatory in the Netherlands, among others. This will be a unique opportunity to enjoy the performance of these two great musicians together with the University of Alicante’s Philharmonic Orchestra, a truly moving and enriching experience.
