On 20 November, at 10 p.m., the play Oedipus the King, by Sophocles, will be staged at Benissa’s Culture Centre. This show, directed by Xavier Monzó, has been organised by the University of Alicante’s La Marina Venue, and will be performed by Yorick Theatre Group. Entrance is free limited to seating capacity.

Sophocles’ tragedy shows Oedipus in his greatest period of splendour, as King of Thebes and husband of Jocasta. However, when Oedipus investigates the death of former King Laius, he finds out that the oracle’s fate, revealed some time ago, has been fulfilled: Oedipus has murdered his father and married his mother Jocasta. The discovery triggers a series of tragic events. Sophocles’ Oedipus the King was considered by Aristotle as the most perfect Greek tragedy in many aspects. According to the theatre company, this play is “a drama of revelation based on the search of what is hidden behind appearances, on the inquiry about the essence of oneself”.

Since 2012, this theatre group has created a new stage in the abandoned quarries of Mount Coto, where Pinoso’s Classical Theatre Festival takes place. In former editions of this festival, Xavier Monzó directed the staging of Antigone and Electra by Sophocles, Medea by Euripides and Los pelópidas, a comedy by author Jorge Llopis from Alicante. In this year’s edition, Oedipus at Colonus and Oedipus the King are the plays to be staged.
