UA's 16th edition of "Social humour days". Graphic humour exhibition dedicated to refugees

Alicante, 29 April 2016

This year's exhibition will be gathering artworks from several cartoonists like Forges, Ortuño, Zulet, Ortifus, Angelines, Whoper, Kap, Nano, Malagón, among others. On 19 May, José Rubio Malagón and Gabino Ponce (UA lecturer) will be receiving the Notario del Humor Award, which is Spain's most important award in the field of graphic humour.

Humor Social XVIThanks to the support of the Federation of Cartoonists Organisations of Spain (FECO-Spain), from 2 May to 30 May, at Aifos Exhibition Room on Campus (Faculty of Arts 3), the University of Alicante will host the 16th edition of Social Humour Days (Muestra de Humor Social). This year’s graphic humour exhibition will be devoted to refugees and entitled “Refugees: Admission rights reserved”.

The main event of the 16th Social Humour Days will be held next Thursday 19 May at 1 p.m. in Aifos Exhibition Room. It will consist of a panel discussion and UA’s Notario del Humor Awards Ceremony, where cartoonist José Rubio Malagón and Gabino Ponce (UA lecturer) will receive the prize. This year, Gabino Ponce will be awarded ad honorem for being one of the driving forces behind this project along with Enrique Pérez, who is also a cartoonist and head of UA’s Corporate Image Office.

The showing includes around 100 works by 44 outstanding international graphic humour authors. Exhibition curator Enrique Pérez underlines that this year’s edition is about a very interesting and hot topic: the refugee crisis. The vice-president of FECO-Spain, Juli Sanchis, emphasised that over 500,000 refugees emigrated from Spain after the civil war, and that Spaniards “have forgotten their own past and are incredibly mean when it comes to accepting the 18,000 refugees that the EU assigned to our country, because only 18 of them have finally been sheltered”.

Cartoonists show everyday issues from a critical perspective and raise people’s awareness on all kinds of social affairs. In former editions, the main topics depicted by the artists were: “to promise the earth and deliver dust”, “a lost generation… or two”, youth unemployment, violence against women, corruption, intolerance, the importance of reading, discrimination, the crisis of values, evictions, and some other circumstances hindering social development whose causes are questioned here through humour and satire.
