Original version film series at the UA San Fernando Venue

Alicante, 26 September 2017

This year's edition of the traditional Original version film series will take place at the Alicante City University Venue (San Fernando 40) from 17 October to 19 December. The University of Alicante Film Club has introduced three new topics and a total of 10 films. This initiative is part of a culture workshop aimed at people interested in going into deeper film analysis. This year’s film series will include three thematic blocks: Denis Villeneuve, beyond conventions (October), Genres nowadays (November) and Icíar Bollaín, moving realism (December).

Through the viewing of the films chosen and a previous introduction by subject matter experts (local film critics and UA lecturers), the Original version film series aims to delve into the hidden details of cinema. In addition, original version film screening also contributes to language learning.

Entrance is free up to the venue capacity. Students interested in obtaining a certificate are required to previously enrol in the culture workshop of this programme and to attend at least 8 out of the 10 films. Participation in debates will be taken into account and students will be requested to write a review on 8 of the films, which will later on be evaluated by coordinators Israel Gil and Raúl García.

As usual, film screenings will take place at 7.30 p.m. on Tuesdays.

OCTOBER: Denis Villeneuve, beyond conventions

"Far from being like most directors in the industry nowadays, he wants the audience to question their view , how we use it to build our own perspective on the world, and therefore to question language and communication. Villeneuve considers image, as well as language, to be both the question and the answer." (Israel Paredes, "Directed by..." NO. 471)

NOVEMBER: Genres nowadays

Over several decades, film genres were part of a mandatory pattern every Hollywood film had to follow. Thus, major film-making studios provided spectators with an easy and predictable approach to the film they were about to see. Even though genre restraints vanished long ago, many film productions still hold on to classic genres: WESTERN, SCIENCE-FICTION, HORROR, MUSICAL. We suggest four wonderful reinterpretations made by modern directors. (Israel Gil, UA Film Club)

DECEMBER: Icíar Bollaín, moving realism

[...] Secondly, I must admit your film-making is very refreshing and close to the audience. You are a master when it comes to expressing social commitment through the best approach to the audience. Far from being categorised as a social cinema director like many others, you focus on fighting for a better society. You help us remember life is made of bittersweet stories. Those types of stories where every cry is a blessing in disguise.. [...] (Manuel Lechón, "Icíar Bollaín, gracias por tus ojos" -ABYCINE-)
