JANO exhibition by Frutos María is being held at the UA Museum

Alicante, 1 December 2017

Translated by Salomé García

"Jano” exhibition by artist Frutos María will be held at the University of Alicante Museum (MUA) from 8 p.m. on 5 December to 22 April 2018.

MUA Christmas opening hours: Open 26, 27, 28, 29, 30 December and 2, 3, 4, 5 January in the morning (9a.m. to 2 p.m.). It will open again on 8 January as usual.

The exhibtion has been organised by Aramis López Juan as well as Juan A. Roche Cárcel, who is a lecturer in Sociology at University of Alicante. “Jano” is divided into several parts that coherently follow the ideology of the artist and create a narrative storyline: doors (beginnings), paths (emotional process), spaces (reflection), architecture (construction) and feelings (endings). Moreover, this sculpture route has been placed in the open, on a rectangular platform in front of the water patina which is, at the same time, located in front of the UA Museum. It leads to the entrance of the building and interacts with the natural and architectural landscape features found there. This way, both sculpture and landscape interweave and increase their meanings and the sense interpreted by the audience.

Frutos MaríaFrutos María, born in 1959 in Burgos, is a consolidated artist living in Alicante. Since his exhibition was first held in 2008, he has created many individual exhibitions and participated in several collective ones. Frutos María’s work focuses both on sculpture and painting, using a wide range of materials such as wood, iron, stone or reinforced concrete.

His artistic style, full of instinct and unique personal creativity, is precisely influenced by these materials. This artist makes use of them to think and implement a particular artistic matter, as well as to materialise his personal and existential ideas.  Overall, his artistic identity can be found in other artists he naturally imitates. Frutos María knows his identity mainly revolves around constructive challenges derived from this specific identity and how they are going to be solved in order to finish his work, following a general process that goes from the matter to the spirit.

Frutos María’s exhibition, held by the UA Museum and placed in the open air in front of the museum itself, is based on the Greco-Latin God Jano. This deity is ambivalent and refers both to beginnings and endings, to origins and destinies, to life and death, to doors and paths, to heaven and earth… Although these opposite poles are embellished by a leading emotional component, the meaning of the exhibition revolves around them. Frutos seems to suggest that every door we cross, every path we take and every space we build -be it natural or architectural-, will inevitably lead us to shared emotions. As if we were never going to get anywhere, as if, in order to succeed in our businesses, we needed to be accompanied or supported by others.
