Mario Benedetti Centre for Ibero-American Studies’ programme will include lectures and seminars by Mexican writer Homero Aridjis, Argentines Luisa Valenzuela and Graciela Batticuore, Colombian Gustavo Forero and Cuban Rolando Menéndez.
This proposal includes the commemoration of the 50th Anniversary of One Hundred Years of Solitude, activities about Mario Benedetti, a theatre performance and the presentation of poetry books, novels, essays and book reviews. The Mario Benedetti Centre for Ibero-American Studies (CEMAB) of the University of Alicante, directed by lecturer Eva Valero, is presenting its new programme for the months February to June 2017. This proposal will include lectures and seminars to be held at the CEMAB facilities and at the UA venues by five Latin American writers: Mexican Homero Aridjis (one of the leading figures in today’s Mexican literature and culture), Argentines Luisa Valenzuela and Graciela Batticuore, Colombian Gustavo Forero, and Cuban Rolando Menéndez. The celebration of the 50th Anniversary of Gabriel García Márquez’s One Hundred Years of Solitude, the most emblematic novel in the 1960s Latin American literature boom will also take place. The programme will as well comprise some activities about Mario Benedetti and his works and several book presentations. Among other initiatives, the CEMAB also participates in the International Congress about Azorín on the 50th Anniversary of his death.
The programme was presented by Centre Director Eva Valero, who also added that after the big success of the first edition of Literary Circle "entre ayer y hoy", the second edition will continue until 15 June.
The programme will start next Monday 13 February with Argentinian lecturer, essayist and poet Graciela Batticuore. On Monday 13 February at 10 a.m., she will deliver the lecture "Tribulaciones de un escritor americano: Sarmiento, de la Pampa a París" at the CEMAB on-campus facilities (Faculty of Arts 3). The following day, she will visit the Alicante City University Venue (located at 4 Ramón y Cajal) at 8 p.m to talk about "La lectora de novelas: entre la prohibición y el placer". Batticuore will present her poetry book La noche on Thursday 16 February at the Torrevieja University Venue (Casino of Torrevieja Cultural Society) at 8 p.m. This will be the last lecture in her visit.
Next participant in the CEMAB programme is another Argentinian writer, Luisa Valenzuela, one of the most well-known authors in Argentinian literature of the last decades. She will hold the lecture "Escribir, esa aventura" on 28 March at noon (CEMAB on-campus facilities). The most outstanding figure in this semester’s agenda will be Mexican writer Homero Aridjis, who will be holding three activities from 9 to 12 May: First (from 9 to 11 May), he will conduct the third edition of the seminar "Un creador nos introduce en su mundo" (Into a writer’s world), previously given by Mario Benedetti and Raúl Zurita, and this year sponsored by the Mexican embassy. On 11 May at 8 p.m he will also hold the lecture "Los pájaros" at the Alicante City University Venue (4 Ramón y Cajal, 4),. where he will not only talk about his writing, but also about his activity as an environmentalist. Finally, on 12 May at 8 p.m. he will offer a poetry reading at the Torrevieja University Venue.
The fourth participant in our programme will be Colombian lecturer and writer Gustavo Forero, who will give the lectures "La reedición de Xicotencatl (1826): primera novela histórica de América Latina” (on 22 May at 10 a.m., at the on-campus CEMAB facilities), and "Escribir en medio de la guerra… y en la paz" (on the same day, at 8 p.m. in the Alicante City University Venue).
Last, Cuban writer Ronaldo Menéndez will be visiting the UA to give a presentation about his book "La casa y la isla: el amor en los tiempos de la post Revolución cubana” on 30 May at 8 p.m. (Alicante City University Venue).
Activities about Mario Benedetti
As a part of the programme, on 24, 25 and 28 March the CEMAB will focus on the life and works of Mario Benedetti, the person after which this Centre of Ibero-American Studies is named. On 24 May at 8 p.m., professor Carmen Alemany will hold the lecture "Mario Benedetti, poeta: de la soledad a la solidaridad” at the Torrevieja University Venue. This will be complemented by the play Una mujer desnuda y en lo oscuro, written and directed by Mario Hernández, which was a great success at Fernán Gómez theatre in Madrid. There will be two performances: one on Saturday 25 March at 8.30 p.m at the Denia University Venue, and the other on Tuesday 28 March at 8 p.m. at the Torrevieja University Venue.
On 8 May, one of the main events in this programme will take place: the commemoration of the 50th Anniversary of the book One Hundred Years of Solitude (1967) by Gabriel García Márquez. José Manuel Camacho, lecturer of the University of Sevilla, will give the talk "Cien años de soledad, una novela de aventuras” (at noon, CEMAB on-campus facilities), and at 1 p.m. there will be an open reading of One Hundred Years of Solitude, one of the greatest pieces in world literature, at the Poets’ Corner.
Apart from the already mentioned presentations (La noche by Graciela Batticuore, on 16 February at the Torrevieja University Venue, and La casa y la isla by Ronaldo Menéndez, on 30 May at the Alicante City University Venue), the programme includes two other presentations. First, the book Raúl Zurita. Alegoría de la desolación y la esperanza. This presentation will be held on the very same day that, two years ago, the University of Alicante awarded an Honoris Causa degree to great Latin Americaan poet Raúl Zurita. The book will be presented on 2 March at 8.15 p.m. in the Alicante City University Venue. Amparo Navarro, Vice President for Research and Knowledge Transfer, Jorge Olcina, Director of the Alicante City University Venue, José Carlos Rovira, author of the preface, and the book’s editors Carmen Alemany, Eva Valero and Víctor M. Sanchis will take part in the event.
Second, book España by Nicolás Guillén, which will be presented on 29 June at the Alicante City University Venue (4 Ramón y Cajal, at 7.30 p.m.). Nicolás Hernandez Guillén, President of Nicolás Guillén Foundation; David Rodríguez, from José Martí Foundation in Valencia; UA professor José Carlos Rovira, and Manuel Parra, from the Civic Commission for the Recovery of the Historical Memory, will participate in this activity, which will be the closing event of this academic year’s programme at CEMAB.
Besides all these activities promoted by the CEMAB, the centre will also participate in international congress "Azorín, Europa y la invención de la literatura nacional" organised by the Faculty of Arts, the Laboratoire Identités, Territoires, Expressions et Mobilités of the University of Pau and Pays de L’Adour and the Alicante Provincial Council. These conferences will be held at the Alicante Provincial Council Auditorium on 1 and 2 March, and at the CEMAB on 3 March.
