MUA participates in the celebrations of the 2017 International Museum Day

Alicante, 11 May 2017

Translated by María Navarro Martínez

A new edition of the International Museum Day (IMD) is held thanks to the joint work of ten exhibition halls in Alicante

This year, the ICOM (International Council of Museums) proposed the motto "Museums and contested histories: saying the unspeakable in museums" for the celebration of the International Museum Day (on 18 May). With this motto in mind, these ten exhibition halls have created a joint programme with a wide range of activities to suit all tastes and ages: guided tours through different exhibitions (with or without performances), dance shows, creative workshops, film screenings, concerts and lectures. The events will take place from 18 to 21 May and include open days and special schedules. The University of Alicante Museum activities will have a strong sense of social demand and awareness.

Cultural centre Las Cigarreras, Juan Gil-Albert Culture Institute, Lonja de Pescado exhibition hall, Aguas de Alicante museum, the MACA (Alicante Museum of Contemporary Art), the MARQ (Alicante Province Archeological Museum), the MUBAG (Alicante fine arts museum), Nueva Tabarca museum, and  Volvo Ocean Race museum are the participants in this cultural initiative born in 2012 thanks to the effort and joint work of the representatives of the aforementioned entities.

The core concept chosen for this year highlights the museums' role and how they can put themselves at the service of society and become pacifying centres between peoples. It also emphasises the fact that accepting a painful past is the first step to imagine a common future where everybody is brought together. As the ICOM points out "when choosing to say the unspeakable at the museums we can apprehend the incomprehensible nature of the painful pasts inherent to humanity. This topic gives museums a chance to become appeasement agents for the traumatic stories of the past thanks to mediation and to the plurality of the viewpoints shown".

Visitors will have a passport that will be stamped at the end of each tour. Obtaining at least five stamps will enable visitors to enter a contest for a present. Passports can be picked up from today onwards in any of the participating centres, and will be stamped from 18 May.

Besides, the programme includes several installations made by third-year architecture students named "Arquitecturas efímeras y controversias culturales". Through these works, they explore the role of ephemeral architecture and the way it enhances the public image of Alicante museums, demonstrating issues of consensus and controversy.  Lecturer Adriana Figueiras guided the students in the development of this architecture and artistic proposal.

The ephemeral architecture proposals will be open to the public on 18 May at Cultural Centre Las Cigarreras, at the MUBAG, at Juan Gil-Albert Culture Institute, at Lonja de Pescado exhibition hall, at the Aguas de Alicante museum, at the MACA, and at the MUA. Both photographers and the press can take as many pictures of the installations as they want.

Entrance to museums and culture centres will be free.

The International Council of Museums (ICOM) has been organising these activities since 1977 in order to raise awareness on the fact that "museums are an important resort for cultural exchanges".
