Holy Interiors

Holy Interiors, an exhibition produced by the UA Museum and organised by lecturer Juan Antonio Roche Cárcel, gathers twenty photocollages made by Pepe Calvo between 2014 and 2017.  The exhibition is backed by the University of Alicante with a catalogue sponsored by the Culture Department of the Alicante Provincial Council. Moreover, it is framed within the series promoted by University of Alicante Vice President for Culture, Sports and Languages Carles Cortés. ”The twenty-one photographs that form Holy Interiors photocollages were created by Pepe Calvo between 2014 and 2017. They follow a series of interior spaces -rooms, studios, living-rooms, bathrooms, kitchens, dressing rooms and garages, factories and even slaughterhouses, barns, , skyscrapers, storage rooms, basements…-, as well as landscapes -fields, mountains, trees-. In any case, they are made-up landscapes in which nothing seems to be what it actually is. In other words, they are places that don’t actually exist but have been reproduced to fit the scene in an exercise of fun and ironic kleptomania which is obviously not subject to legal action, of photographic fragments that do refer to reality. Thus, we find ourselves facing a group of cutbacks from a range of backgrounds, which form hybrid images that interrelate their parts in a complex, surreal and even labyrinthine way. The difficulty of unravelling Pepe Calvo’s images comes as no surprise. Interpreting them is a laborious exercise that consists of deconstructing, consecutively - as if they were onion layers -, the elements that form those images until they are understood. Not completely understood though, given that the artist leaves behind - as if it was an Alfred Hitchcock’s film - an impenetrable aura of mystery, of a crime that has been resolved unsuccessfully, a hint of a so deep and complex psychology that one can get lost in it.

On the other hand, those images establish a reasoning between reality and what it doesn’t look like it, keeping in mind, however, that a series of transparent windows reveal other places and that numerous mirrors reflect and reproduce different aspects of reality - spaces themselves or objects contained there-,  therefore doubled or tripled this way. Gazing through these windows and mirrors, going beyond them,  ultimately means going into another world which, however, seems to be inseparably related to its alter ego.  In that way, what it is and what it is not, interiors and exteriors, privacy and what is shared with others, nature and architecture, high and low, and sacred and profane, end up shaping a merged unit in which nothing is what it seems to be. A unit in which everything is both possible and impossible. Overall, that is what Pepe Calvo’s work is about:  making the unbelievable believable.”

Juan A. Roche Cárcel, exhibition curator
