The UA Museum will open its doors to the 'Ferran Cabrera Cantó, 150 years' exhibition

Alicante, 6 December 2017

Translated by Salomé García

At 7 p.m. on Monday 11 December, the University of Alicante Museum (MUA) will open up a retrospective exhibition dedicated to the distinguished painter from Alcoy Ferran Cabrera Cantó, in tribute to the 150th anniversary of his birth. This exhibition offers a perspective view concerning all the stages and styles this multifaceted painter went through along his artistic career for more than fifty years: academicism, realism, preciosity, modernism, all culminating with a Luminisme plein air of loose paint-stroke and detailed drawing. The exhibition will be held until 21 January 2018 at El Club Hall.

MUA’s opening hours: Monday/Friday: 09.00-20.00h  -  Saturdays and Sundays: 10.00-14.00h

Ferran Cabrera

"When it comes to aesthetics, and even society, Ferran Cabrera Cantó continues to be an iconic artist through time in the collective memory of Alcoy and its people. Why does he transcend time and remain in the collective memory of these people? Because, unlike the men of his time, Cabrera Cantó went beyond: he created beauty. He created beauty by interpreting the surrounding reality from his freedom of choice. Contemplating his painting makes the spectator feel an aesthetic pleasure, a scale of values that goes from kindness to beauty and even reaches the extraordinary sometimes. Ferran Cabrera lets us identify the taste and the pleasure felt by the viewing of his work. That is where his magic lies, a magic that has transcended time and has led to this retrospective exhibition that honours the 150th anniversary of his birth.

Moreover, the exhibition intends to show works that have not been displayed for over 50 years, together with other paintings that had always remained as collectors’ private heritage.   We are truly thankful to all art lovers and those who preserve the memory of the artist, who have lent his works of art, as well as to both public and private bodies that have done their part to make this exhibition possible on the 150th anniversary of Cabrera Canto’s birth.” Josep Lluìs Antequera, curator.

The exhibition offers a route through the artist’s different stylistic stages and his typical works in each of them:

1. Formative stage in Spain: Sant Carles Academy (Valencia), Llorenç Casanova studio workshop (Alcoi) and San Fernando Academy (Madrid) (1881-1891). Romantic realism, symbolism and religious paintings.

2. Formative stage in Italy: Roma, Naples, Florence and Venice academies (1892- 1894). Social realism, Costumbrismo, mythological scenes and nude painting.

3. Alcoi: the artist’s return home (1895-1937). Paintings on love and death, academic realism, still life, religious paintings, portraits, costumbrismo, interiors, luminism and self-portraits.
