The 80s are the main theme of 'Retroaliméntate de la Cultura en la UA'

Alicante, Monday 26 March 2018
Translated by Alejandro Puertas

The fourth edition of the cultural event “Aliméntate de la Cultura” is about to begin. For the second year in a row, the theme of the event is retro style, and it will take place on 27 April at Las Cigarreras cultural centre.

The programme includes the photography exhibition called “Lo que la noche se llevó” which will show what happened in the Alicante music scene during the 80s. Other events organised are Retrokids, where children will be able to play traditional games, the visit of Star Wars’ 501st legion, two DJ performances, a concert by the band Navvier and to end the event, the 24 hours party people, a party which recreates the club culture of the 80s.

Cande Sanchez, lecturer of the UA Master’s degree in communication and creative industries (COMINCREA), is responsible for this year’s event. Patricia Capella, Elizabeth Spiegel and Begoña Ferre, students of that Master’s degree, are co-organising this activity which will put together cultural and creative industries of a wide range of fields such as music, fashion, photography, dance, and gastronomy. The organising team includes other students like Rubén Soriano, Alexandra Domínguez and Sabá Jiménez.

Graphic designer Patricia Capella  said that the logo is based on neon light signs and very bright colours. She emphasises that graphic design for this year’s event has been influenced by the typical visual culture of the 80s and 90s to create a unique image.

Tuesday 27 April:

  • Retro Kids, at the Jardín Vertical building of the Las Cigarreras cultural centre,

at 5.30 p.m. children can participate in  the activity Juegos Reunidos, in which they will enjoy playing with the most traditional toys of the 80s such as marbles or spinning tops.

At 6.30 p.m. the 501st Legion – with Darth Vader as their captain – will make a grand entrance at the event to celebrate the passion that people have had for Star Wars for generations.

  • Music and Dance, at the Jardín Vertical building of the Las Cigarreras cultural centre,

At 7.30 pm, music school from Alicante InSitu, will make a street dance performance with music by DJ Jess Set.

  • Photographic exhibition Lo que la noche se llevó, at Hall Casa de la Música at 20.30 p.m. until 3 May.

Organised by UA students under the supervision of lecturer Enric Mira. The exhibition curated by Begoña Ferre, is a tribute to those people and music bands which took part in Alicante’s 80s music scene such as Morticia y los Decrépitos, Café Greco and Aspirantes a la Horka, among others.

  • Concerts, at La Caja Negra,

at 10 p.m, music band from the Valencia region Navvier, will perform electro-pop songs which resemble  the 80s music. The show includes flashlights, neon lights and visual effects, which will make of the concert an incredible experience.

At 11 p.m., the 24 hours party people will take place with music by DJ Psycho Dark. This event is based on the dark parties of the 80s. It will be a nostalgic moment in which attendants will listen to international post-punk bands.

Apart from all these activities, many stands will be open from 5 p.m. to 10 p.m. during the festival. There will be two different areas: the retro market (Blue Belbet, Cinema Paradiso and Socks&Co, among others) and Foodtrucks (Alacant Street Food Market).
