The United Nations Declaration on Human Rights defenders was adopted in 1998. The declaration’s full name is the “Declaration on the Right and Responsibility of Individuals, Groups and Organs of Society to Promote and Protect Universally Recognized Human Rights and Fundamental Freedom” and is a recognition of human rights defenders around the world and their significant work.

However, despite the international agreements which to protect these people, organisations and communities defending human rights, they are continuously facing violence acts and serious risks against them. They experience the systematic violation of their own rights only because they insist on defending them. In fact, more than 1,000 human rights defenders were threatened, chased, arrested, penalised and harassed in 2018. These people were also physically and socially assaulted, as well as prosecuted. At least 321 people from 27 countries were murdered for defending the territory, environment, indigenous communities rights, free expression and gender identities, among others.

The aim of the Peace Brigades International (PBI) and the Mundubat Foundation in this exhibition is to give recognition to these people, organisations and communities. People who face violence acts but still work everyday to promote civil, political, economic, social, cultural and environmental rights.

This exhibition shows the experiences of human rights defenders in 20 different situations located in 5 countries. Mexico, Honduras, Guatemala, Colombia and Palestine.

These stories are just a small sample of the numerous cases around the world. The focus of this graphic stories exhibition is to raise awareness about their fights, claims, risks and those joint initiatives they have set up in order to face them.
