'Antoni Miró. De Museu' Exhibition Opening and Antoni Miró Research Chair Awards Presentation

Translated by Irene Nieva Moratalla
Alicante. Wednesday, 9 December 2020.

On Thursday 10 December at 8 p. m., the University of Alicante Museum and the UA Antoni Miró Research Chair in Contemporary Art open the exhibition "Antoni Miró. De Museu", which brings together more than 200 works by the artist from Alcoy (Alicante) from 2012 until now. The exhibition hall of the University of Alicante Museum el Cub will host this exhibition until 21 February 2021. The opening ceremony will include the award presentation of the UA Antoni Miró Research Chair in Contemporary Art.

Antoni Miró dedicates this exhibition to the recently deceased writer from Alcoy Isabel-Clara Simó, with an exhibition itinerary that includes five series: Nus i Nues; Suite Havana, Costeres i Ponts; Mani-festa; and Personatges.

Since 2017 the artist has been working in "Nus i Nues", his most extensive series made up of more than 140 works, most of which will be exhibited at the University of Alicante Museum. "Suite Havana", "Costeres i Ponts" and "Mani-festa" are the series that complete the exhibition. From them, a selection of the most representative work will be made. Finally, "Personatges", a mural made up of 24 portraits in which Antoni Miró pays tribute to people who have left their mark because of their political integrity and commitment to culture.

Antoni Miró's work (Alcoy, 1944) is framed within realism and social denunciation. At the end of the 1960s, his interest in this subject led him to a neo-figurative art with a message of criticism and denunciation that was identified with an artistic movement called "chronicle of reality" in the 1970s, inserted within the international flows of pop-art and realism.

The award presentation of the UA Antoni Miró Research Chair in Contemporary Art will follow the opening ceremony.

The event will be streamed at http://vertice.cpd.ua.es/233125

UA Antoni Miró Research Chair in Contemporary Art Awards

Antoni Miró's "Victòria absent". A work that means the absence of victory in the cultural world

Fernando Castro

Fernando Castro
Art Criticism Award 2020

To lecturer Fernando Castro (Plasencia, 1964). His depth of thought and analysis in determining the conceptual and aesthetic scope of the creative act is widely recognised. He unreservedly compares the surrounding social reality with the need for a renewed artistic expression, all of which is supported by the legitimacy of philosophical reflection as a truly intellectual vehicle of communication.

Miquel Navarro
Plastic Arts Award 2020

To the Valencian artist Miquel Navarro (Mislata, 1945). Painting, sculpture, engraving, and installations comprise this multidisciplinary artist's creative work, which is inserted in the heart of his versatile capacity. Moreover, Miquel Navarro is characterised by his high intensity when it comes to generating unusual imaginative worlds, shaping spaces where civility is inscribed. In many of his creations, the raw material is resolved with the use of terracotta, bringing organic and primitive sources closer to his constructive discourse.

Joan Genovés
Posthumous Painting Award 2020

To the painter Joan Genovés (Valencia 1930 - Madrid 2020). He has been one of the most significant representatives of "political realism" and his work has been permanently built around social commitment and the renewal of contemporary art. Either man alone or the multitude are among his artistic concerns when it comes to tackling creative challenges. His work is considered an essential reference to understand what the artist's involvement in the values of the community means.

Isabel-Clara Simó
Posthumous Commitment to Plastic Arts Award 2020

To the writer Isabel-Clara Simó (Alcoy 1943 - Barcelona 2020). Her vast literary work includes many items on plastic arts in which the author is firmly committed to the values of solidarity and commitment generated by art towards a better understanding of the world and human beings. This master investigates within the soul in contemporary proposals, formulating all kinds of reflections that reach the reality in the civic and social behaviour from the fine philosophical concepts. Her voice, always raised in defence of what is fair and essential for an equal life, takes root in the art to proclaim the importance of plastic language as a vehicle for the expression of existence.
