Arts Library is showing a bibliographic exhibition that collects some of the works of the three distinguished writers as well as a group of books that reflect the society, culture and time of their era. This exhibition is situated within the framework of UA's celebration of the 400th anniversary of Miguel de Cervantes and William Shakespeare's death, and Ramón Llull's 700 anniversary.

UA Film Club has organised its usual cinema cycles in the original version at the UA for the rest of academic year 2016-17. They will take place every Thursday at 4 p.m. from 23 February to 18 May 2017. "Timadores" (Swindlers) and "Cine y catolicismo" (Cinema and Catholicism) will be the selected cycles for this edition. Entrance is free, but you may register here if you are interested in getting a certificate.

San Fernando 40 University Venue will screen the cycles in the original version "Naomi Kawase", "El color combina con el blanco y negro" (Colour suits pretty well with black and white) and "Cuando ella no está viva" (When she's not alive) on every Tuesday from February to May. Pensando en los más jóvenes, estas Navidades el Ayuntamiento de Benilloba y la Universidad de Alicante han programado este ciclo de cine en el que se proyectarán las películas: "El alucinante mundo de Norman" (Focus Features / LAIKA, 2012), "Exploradores" (Paramount Pictures, 1985) y "Las aventuras de Tadeo Jones" (Dir. Enrique Gato, 1990).
Enrique Franco López, an Architecture student at the University of Alicante, has won the contest with a project based on Torrevieja's salt lakes and its colours.
The University of Alicante's Main Library opened the new researchers hall with the name of the famous hispanist researcher on 21 December 2016. It contains the personal funds that Russell P. Sebold himself left to the institution on his testament.

We will begin 2017's ACUA programme with a Music Fundraiser concert at the UA Auditorium. The University of Alicante Choir, directed by pianist Sholomo Rodríguez, has prepared a recital in benefit of Fundación Noray Proyecto Hombre Alicante, a non-profit organization devoted to help people with drug addiction and other addictive disorders. In keeping with tradition, University of Alicante's Culture Service has created a new series of culture workshops. Without forgetting the traditional cinema, dance, plastic arts, writing and oratory workshops, this year's programme will also include several new proposals such as how to become an actor or start a TV and Internet cultural programme, as well as an introduction to juggling, thriller writing and art coordination.

The exhibition defends the identity of the Workers' Commission (CCOO) union as a sociopolitical movement made by employees from all workplaces. It highlights several determining elements of their organization, such as the generational and cultural shift from the 60's, the opposition to dictator Franco and their fight for human rights, their behaviour as a social movement, their unionist vocation and their confrontation against neoliberalism.

Cervantes, Shakespeare y las imágenes. Este es el título de la conferencia que impartirá el director de la Real Academia Española Darío Villanueva con motivo del cierre de las celebraciones por el cuarto centenario de Cervantes y Shakespeare en la UA. A continuación se inaugurará la Sala Sebold en la Biblioteca de Filosofía y Letras (Edificio de la Biblioteca General, 2ª planta), con la exposición "Fray Gerundio en la obra y el legado de Sebold".

From 25 November to 11 December - Santa Faz Square, Alicante
The 10th edition of this exhibition will include an updated selection comprising 32 images printed in large canvases. They show the reality of the most extreme cases of gender violence, with around 70 women being murdered each year in Spain by men. The exhibition will open on 25 November, which is the International Day for the Elimination of Violence against Women.
Thursday 15 December - Casino of Torrevieja Cultural Society - 8 p.m.
This will be the second session of the Conferences dedicated to Cervantes in Torrevieja, which are held within the framework of the activities to commemorate the 400th anniversary of the literary genius' death. This Thursday's lectures will be Tips to "unread" Don Quixote by Ángel Luis Prieto de Paula (Spanish Literature Professor at the UA), and The splendour of Don Quixote in Europe by José María Ferri (Spanish Literature Senior lecturer at the UA).
Fifteen years directing Alicante's Principal Theatre -between 1984 and 1999- and his firm commitment with culture and society have made Luis de Castro deserve the Maissonave award given by the University of Alicante every year; an award that bears the name of the first elected mayor of Alicante.

After having created several diaries and prototypes that mix words and images, Juanan Requena will present his first photography book, entitled Al borde de todo mapa, a work produced together with Montse Puig, publisher at Ediciones Anómalas.

Poet and awarded novelist Traian Dobrinescu, who is a member of the Romanian Parliament, will hold the lecture Writing in 21st-century Romania. The writer will also take part in the presentation of the 11th issue of Quaderns de cine (a monographic issue dedicated to current Romanian cinema). This event will include the reading of a passage of the novel Nu te opri, nu te întoarce in both Romanian and Spanish.

The UA Theatre Club tour of La Marea continues. This play is based on works by Angélica Liddell and on real testimonies of immigrants that currently live in Alicante. La Marea (when fish started to fight against men) is a play with a strong social commitment towards the drama of migration- Directed by: Iván Jiménez.
Tuesday 20 December - UA Auditorium - 8 p.m.
The famous theatre company Dagoll Dagom performed Nit de Sant Joan for the first time at the Romea Theatre in Barcelona more than 30 years ago. This show presents all the traditions of the magical June 23 night with a music hall structure, including sketches and musical performances. Now, theatre group Pla de Teatre, from "El Pla" High School, takes up the torch with a performance completely created by students and teachers from the school.

The University of Alicante Choir has chosen a quite varied programme for its Christmas concert, including famous pieces such as Cant dels ocells, J. S. Bach's music, several opera fragments from Madama Butterfly and La Traviata, as well as some pieces from Christmas films. Next dates: 14 December at 8 p.m. in the Culture Centre Auditorium of Alfàs del Pi, and 16 December at 8 p.m. in the Municipal Auditorium of L'Orxa.
The University of Alicante has just opened the call for proposals for the next edition of "Rafael Altamira" Summer Courses. Areas: science, technology, human and social sciences and culture. Registration is open up to 16 January.

En el 150 aniversario del nacimiento de Rafael Altamira y Crevea, el Área de Historia del Derecho y el Departamento de Traducción e Interpretación de la UA organizan esta jornada-debate con el objetivo ofrecer claves para el entendimiento del perfil ideológico e intelectual del insigne historiador del Derecho y juez del Tribunal Permanente de Justicia Internacional de La Haya (1921-1930).

Last week we visited the 3rd Thematic Conferences on French language, which were directed by María Isabel Corbí and Ma Àngels Llorca. After the two previous editions, not only have they achieved the same level of interest and quality, but they have also improved it.
Meet the three protagonists of this series, Rubén, África and Gabi, and decide how you would like the episodes to continue by participating on Facebook. This project has been promoted by EPS Radio Station (the Polytechnic School radio), and has the support of both UA Culture and the Observatory for Labour Market Integration.
14, 15, 16 and 17 December - Dénia, Cocentaina, Elda and Alicante
The OFUA (University of Alicante Philharmonic Orchestra) has just started its Christmas tour, which includes five concerts this year. In Alicante, the orchestra will give a Family Concert at Gran Vía shopping centre, followed by the Charitable Christmas Rotary Club-UA Concert at ADDA (Alicante Provincial Council Auditorium) in benefit of Caritas Internationalis. Apart from this, Christmas concerts will also be held in Dénia, Cocentaina and Elda. The programme includes various renowned compositions such as "The Nutcracker" ballet Suite by P. I. Tchaikovsky, several waltzes and polkas by Strauss and a few surprises.

La UA abre el plazo de matriculación a las pruebas de acreditación de valenciano para el mes de enero de 2017. La superación de los exámenes comporta la expedición de un certificado de la JQCV del nivel correspondiente y de uno de la UA. Este año, las pruebas se pueden hacer en el campus de Sant Vicent del Raspeig y en Torrevieja.

Immerse yourself in the Roma culture in an enjoyable, fresh and fun atmosphere thanks to FAGA (Roma Society Federation for the Region of Valencia). The fair will include several workshops to learn how to play a box drum, to get to know the Roma juerga (a reunion where people sing, drink and dance flamenco) and a storytelling, among others. Within the framework of its promotion activities to foster contemporary art (especially art linked to the Valencian context), Research chair Antoni Miró has collaborated in the organisation of three exhibitions that have been recently opened in the city of Alcoi. The three exhibitions are Slopes, bridges and chimneys, by Antoni Miró and Miquel Navarro; An idea of landscape, by Pau Sellés; and An inquisitivegaze, by Rafael Llorens.
«The difficulty lies in choosing between self-dignity and other people's lives. This play tries to dissolve the guilt/innocence dualism in a similar way to that of classical texts, which represent tragic heroes who committed terrible and lethal actions, often without being aware of them».

La Sede Ciudad de Alicante presenta una nueva sesión del Seminario Salud, Mujeres y Género, con una interesante reflexión sobre el velo islámico en la que intervendrán la afgana Nadia Ghulam, quien adoptó la identidad de su hermano fallecido y cambió el velo blanco por el turbante, y Awatef Ketiti, que reflexionará sobre los discursos y las políticas del velo en un mundo globalizado.

UA Audiovisual Studio photographer Roberto Ruíz has decided to photograph Antoni Miró's sculpture Almansa 1707, which is located in the fountain next to building 3 of the Faculty of Arts. Playing with the light of the different times of the day, Ruíz gives us the chance to rediscover one of the artworks that embellishes our campus.
